A 12.03 carat blue diamond has broken the record for the most expensive fancy coloured diamond ever sold. Auctioned by Sotheby’s in Geneva the ‘Blue Moon of Josephine’ achieved the $48.4m (£31.7m) record price, the culmination of an 8 minute bidding war between two phone bidders. Joseph Lau, the new owner of the remarkable diamond, confirmed he bought it for, and named it after his 7 year old daughter Josephine. Lau, also purchased a 16.08 carat fancy pink diamond for $28.5m at Christie’s on Tuesday naming it “Sweet Josephine”; and the 7.03 carat “Star of Josephine” purchased for $9.5m in 2009.
